Mineral Air Foundation, Blush and Bronzer Pigment Perfection

There’s real science behind the art of Mineral Air’s complexion color composition. Illustration for Mineral Air by @GREENK_JPN.

Four-in-One Foundation Information #4: This is the final of a 4-part Mineral Air series deconstructing the major components (primer, concealer, hydrator, pigment) of our extraordinary multitasking foundation formula.

Where do the makeup colors come from?

The minerals we use themselves are pigmented. We source them from Japan.

How was the color palette decided?

Our team looked at scores of prestige foundations from around the world to find exactly the colors we wanted to develop. We initially launched with 7 colors then added 4 more by customer demand. From there, we created literally hundreds of lab samples to get the formulas just right; not only did they have to be the right colors but they had to function seamlessly with the other ingredients to be transformed by AirMist Device.

Can the pigments be mixed or blended?

Yes and some people like to slightly modify their mix according to the seasons. Between the 11 foundation colors, 3 blushes and bronzer, it is possible to get the colors and effects you’re going for.

Are the color choices different in Japan than in the U.S.?

No, they’re identical. We are an international, inclusive brand offering our full range of pigments wherever we are sold.

What are the optical properties of the Mineral Air formula that hides flaws yet lets the natural skin color show through?

We’re very proud that with Mineral Air, skin looks like skin. While the minerals themselves carry the pigment that gets finely blended with the other ingredients, the AirMist Device transforms the mixture into micronized (to the tune of 30 microns) spheres. Unlike traditional makeups that lay flat, these actually drape across the skin’s surface to diffuse unwanted imperfections while still allowing natural color to peek through. The infinitesimal gaps between the spheres also mean the skin is breathable and the pores don’t clog.

Are the same processes of R&D involved with the Mineral Air blushes and bronzer?

Yes, indeed they are.

What’s the difference?

Mineral Air offers two device-plus-formula categories, one for makeup, the other for skincare.
Mineral Air original (MA) includes its AirMist Device, an easy to use, everyday consumer tool that rivals professional airbrushing in its cosmetic application of our eponymous foundation, blush, or bronzer.
Mineral Air Skin (MAS) features the Renewal Serum System with its ElixerMist Device for lightweight vaporized delivery.
