Kirschen Katz’s 30-Second Escapes from  Lock-Down Stress

One of celebrity yoga instructor Kirschen Katz’s favorite things is to help her students set and meet little goals. “Never underestimate the power of the moment. Even when long term strategies are too much to contemplate, meeting a little goal or two counts as a real win for your day.”

Particularly rewarding examples of these are her 30-Second Escapes. “When we’re beset with negativity (and who isn’t these days?) it’s very easy for the brain and body to obsessively cycle through the same feelings of tension and helplessness over and over. What a good 30-Second Escape can do is break that pattern to let other, more healing, feelings enter the picture.”

Krischen is not pretending that these half-minute tips will erase all that ails you. But, 30 seconds is enough to actually make a neurological change in the brain, lower blood pressure, engage the body and help rob fear of its power. And that’s huge.

Here are a few favorites:

Hot shower for contemplation

Sit underneath the shower head, watch and feel the warmth embrace your body.

Cold shower for invigoration

You may have to work up to this in 10 second increments to get to a full 30 second icy wake-up call but it’ll feel amazing when it’s over.

Jump rope for energy

Even small blasts of full body cardio gets you out of your head and full body cardio is best of all. Remember though, when jumping rope to be sure to do it on a mat (a yoga mat will do) so reduce strain on your knees and ankles.

Upside down for a perception shift

If you can’t manage a handstand or headstand, doing a down dog pose or hanging upside down off the side of your bed will shift your perception. Really pay attention to your reactions to this newly topsy-turvy take on the world.

5-4-3-2-1 to release anxiety

This is a beloved classic that works every time.
5: Acknowledge FIVE things you see around you.
4: Acknowledge FOUR things you can touch around you.
3: Acknowledge THREE things you hear.
2: Acknowledge TWO things you can smell.
1: Acknowledge ONE thing you can taste.

Here’s another one that may take some applied practice. But every single moment you’re dancing (or trying to) delivers a brilliant blast of joy. This link can get you started.

Chocolate for indulgence

Put two squares of chocolate in front of you. Time how long it takes to eat the first at normal speed. Now, eat the second but stretch out the time to 30 seconds, staying conscious as you enjoy. What was the difference? Once that gets easy, try it for 60 seconds and observe every note you can while relishing the experience.
